Bam! Just like that the upload stage of the March leg of the Oakley One Wonder hit you in the face with some sick action and sped by. It’s almost time for voting to begin, but last minute entries will be accepted (you’ve got till midnight Saturday), before voting begins on Sunday 25 March.
The judging panel are going to have a tough time deciding which of this month’s crazy entries stands out above the rest.
“An air would have to be pretty crazy to top one of the really good heavy barrels entered this month,” said One Wave Wonder judge Dave Weare, “but it can be done. I’d imagine it (an air) will battle this month purely because we got a crazy good cyclone swell that just happened to produce a lot of barrel clips for the 1WW.”
Dave won’t be judging this month’s leg as he’s got an entry himself submitted that stands a chance of taking the cash, so ace photographer AVG will be filling in for him.
So, with the judges facing the difficult conundrum of whether an air, mental turn or crazy barrel are worthy of becoming a finalist, we’re expecting their votes to be heavily split this month – which means it could come down to a single reader vote that makes the difference. One thing we can almost guarantee is that there is going to be a wide spread of voting. Maybe your vote will be that tipping point?
Check out the highlights clip below of some of this month’s entries, then click here to go and vote for your favourite when voting kicks off on Sunday.
More about the Oakley One Wave Wonder:
Tubes, airs, carves, tow-ins, tow-ats, massive waves, small waves, combos…
We’re looking for anything deemed an outstanding single ride by entrants that pushes the performance of surfing. And the best thing? It’s open to any South African surfer, no matter where in the world the ride is documented.
The rules remain largely the same. The event officially starts 1 January 2012, but with a slightly different prize structure. The monthly loot has been increased to R15000, (R9000 to the surfer, R6000 to the person who documents it). All five monthly winners will automatically become finalists for the Ride of the Season, where one winner will be voted for after the contest closes on 30 June 2012.
The winning surfer will then hit the motherload with a cash prize of R30 000, and this year a Yamaha VX1100 WaveRunner valued at R120k. The person who documents it won’t fare too badly themselves, scoring an all expenses paid trip for two to Macaronis Surf Camp, worth over R50 000 and made possible by All Aboard Travel.
Groms get to cash in as well, with the best U16 clip each month winning a custom shape from Spider valued at over R3000.
As with the 2011 edition, both January and February rides will count for the first month. To upload entries or vote, simply sign up as a member on the website. Go to www.1wavewonder.co.za for all the rules, terms and conditions.
